Counting the rings

Image:

Description: Counting tree rings is a great thing to do, whether as a dendrologist or a 9-year old kid or any one in between. This Red pine tree was one of hundreds planted 52 years prior to stabilize a steep bank and they had begun to show signs of the end of life. We had them cut and, because taking them out as sawlogs was impractical, left them to provide for what is next. It was easy for our grandson to see where in the tree he was born and that it was older than grandpa!

Counting tree rings certainly helps put things in perspective. The earlier in life one figures this out, the better. Good story here.
