This is from the same beach as my last image of the Tafoni in Central California. While I was searching for tafoni patterns and oddities, I noticed this orange sandstone rock with lines dancing on its surface. I tried to compose this where it had at least a little bit of balance. Let me know if I succeeded or not. This is full frame with no crop at all shot in a 4x5 aspect ratio. I had fairly soft light for this as it was cloudy even though this was early afternoon.

Looks as though the clouds did provide lovely lighting for shaded and highlighted areas, David. Composition works for me. The two diagonal lines on each corner balance very well along with the diagonal line in the center. Very nicely seen and captured.

The range of golden hues against the diagonal lines work well with this composition. The structural balance looks good to me but tonally it feels a little brighter on the left half. I like how the lines are reaching for the corners.

Beautiful work. Diane’s assessment is right on. I have to say that I don’t consider this to be an abstract but a closeup of sandstone.

Wonderful image David! Never would have guessed this was sandstone/Tafoni. At a short distance, I think I was mistaking this for closeup of some redwood bark with the luminosity kicked up a bit. Just doesn’t speak Tafoni to me - which, IMHO makes this a great abstract since I only know what it is because you told us!
Really like the precious metal coloring. Can’t think of anything that could improve this. Beautifully seen and captured.

Linda, you nailed it. I tried to line up the 2 lines in the URC and the LLC while placing the two central lines down the middle of the frame. I also tried to make sure that the little squiggly lines in the ULC and the LRC were about the same distance from the top and bottom of the frame. I guess my main concern was that the larger, lighter line going down the central part of the image was too far right.
Andre, you are correct about the tones being brighter on the left half. I will take care of that. Thanks for seeing that.
Lon, I thought this might fool some people if they had not read where I actually shot this which is why I put this in the Abstract gallery. I can see redwood bark here. The coloring here is actually pretty much as it was with just a slight contrast adjustment to make it pop a little bit. The taffoni sandstone seems to bleed colors in unique and different ways depending on the rock you are looking at. Or maybe they absorb rather than bleed colors, I’m not sure but as @Igor_Doncov has stated, they are very expressive. Nonetheless, thanks for your comment.

Gorgeous!! And very unique for rock! My mind flips between sandstone and some sort of bark, and likes both ideas equally well. Beautifully framed!
