Pileated Woodpecker

I’ve been hoping to get some shots of a Pileated Woodpecker I’ve recently been hearing in our neighborhood. Yesterday this handsome male stopped by and, although I got lots of shots of him, this one really got my attention. That is not food, that’s his tongue! Who knew?! D500, Nikon 200-500 lens, Nikon 1.4 TC, monopod, AI Clear, 1/1000th, f 8.0, 370mm, ISO 5000, cropped to 3090 x 3886.

Awesome catch, Dave!

Fantastic catch, Dave! I’ve never seen one with his tongue out. Just a mention that the photo looks just a bit hazy to me, but maybe it’s just my eyes. Nice work.

Very cool catch! Did you know woodpecker’s tongues wrap around their brains in the back of their heads when they’re pulled in? It’s amazing.

I’d like to see more room on the left - the side the bird is looking towards. And it looks a tad soft and low contrasty, but a terrific portrait. I still have yet to get one despite them being everywhere.
