Snipe hunt in Iceland

From an open car window. There are very few places to stop on the roads in Iceland because there are no shoulders. There are 45 degree gravel filled embankments right at the edge of the tarmac. Getting out of the car can be difficult and dangerous. Snipes tend to perch on fence posts. Iceland has 350000 people in the entire country, most of whom live in the two major cities. But there are millions of sheep. The mostly wire fences are adjacent to many road areas and do little to keep the sheep contained thus another road hazard.

A fun image, David. Not what we usually think of a a place to find Snipe. With that few people, if you’re away from towns, can you just stop on the road most of the time? I actually found a road in Texas of all places where I could regularly get away with that.
