Wildlife spots in the DC area?

Hi everyone,

It seems I will have some time to spend in Washington DC in the first half of January.

I am not too familiar with the surroundings, the only place I know of is Conowingo dam as a bald eagle hot spot.

Is anyone willing to share more places for wildlife viewing and photography within 1-2hrs from metro DC?

Any input is welcome, here or via a private message.

No Zoos or farms please though, I am interested in wild animals only.

Thanks a lot already.

Denis

Hi Denis,
One of my favorite spots, not far from DC is Huntley Meadows Park in Fairfax County VA, only 15 minutes from DC. There is abundant wildlife there, pretty much year round. They offer many walking trails and a considerable amount of boardwalk that gives you opportunity to get close to wildlife. I used to live in Alexandria VA and it was a place I visited frequently and I was rarely disappointed in the experience. Good luck and hope you enjoy your stay. https://www.fairfaxcounty.gov/parks/huntley-meadows
