The Rock Goes to Space

The entire rock from which I photographed a section for the last post. I went back this morning and put this on some black felt and used some white plastic as a mild reflector to get some light on the dark side. 5DIII, 180 mm f/3.5macro, off camera flash on the end of a monopod to allow easy repositioning. Flash in manual mode at 1/2 power. f/25 for increased depth of field.

I think this view shows the layers better and I think the lighting shows the contours better.

Yep, my first thought on seeing the thumb was “moon rock”. This is a great look at this nicely layered rock. Your extra lighting efforts paid off very well, Dennis. The totally black background really shows of the rock and it’s details.
