Where rainbows appear is determined by optical physics, so they are always specifically located. A rainbow can only appear when there’s bright sun behind you and water drops in the air in front of you. The main rainbow appears at the angle of 42 degrees (thinking 45 degrees is good enough) to the line formed by your head (or the camera) and the sun (or other bright light source). There are lots of other colorful atmospheric optical phenomena that may appear in the sky when clouds are present. A thorough description and lots of good photos of these phenomena are found here.
